One Hour Tournament 2001

Result:

Andrew Robinson 1 Brian Willcock 0

This Friday night saw the crucial Round 7 game between Brian Willcock, playing with the black pieces, and Andrew Robinson. Brian needed to win to keep up with Gabriel Boross at the top of the table but came up against a record of 4 draws and 6 losses in his 10 encounters to date with Andrew. Unfortunately for Mr Willcock, history repeated itself, but not this time in the dramatic fashion that has concluded some of the more memorable recent encounters. The game was closely fought in the early stages with Brian replying to Andrew’s standard d4 opening with a queenside attack applying pressure to the pinned knight on c3. After castling, white was able to capture a pawn in the centre and the exchange (knight for rook – move 20), but at the cost of Brian moving his queen to the kingside, gaining tempo, and launching one of his trademark blitzkriegs, ably assisted by a well positioned bishop on c6. Andrew just managed to cover some of the gruesome possibilities at which point Brian overlooked that the g2 pawn was not pinned, gave away a knight for a pawn, effectively ending the game as a contest.
