Friday night saw four games played which produced a number of upsets. Black dominated, winning three of the four games played, with the other one drawn.

Chief among the upsets was the victory of club secretary Peter Hiller who defied both his lowly rating and his usual problems with time trouble to defeat 2nd seed Harvey Quaresmini. Harvey is having a horror trot and is still without a win after 4 rounds.

Brian Willcock continued his run of wins over Gabby Boross in competition games. Gabby remarked afterwards that Brian is the only player he hasn’t beaten at the club and that he is truly his jinx!

Top seed Andrew Robinson overcame a dreadful start against promising junior Patrick Tao to pull a draw out of the fire. Patrick was a pawn up with a huge positional advantage and mate seemed inevitable at one stage with the white bishop and queen bearing down on h7, but a vital skewer was found which saved the day. When Patrick offered a draw it was readily accepted as time trouble was also coming into the equation…

In the other game, Doug Foster managed a win over fellow veteran Stuart Wilson.
